Hello. I am new to this forum. This may sound like pretty stupid question, but I couldn't find an answer anywhere. I would like to buy a new kayak, but I was told by guy in Mercedes showroom, that anything transported on the top of the car can not be longer than the car itself. At the moment I have got a small Renault Clio with 3.7m length. I would like to buy a kayak with 4.1m length. Can I transport such a kayak on the roof (by law), or do I need a longer car?! I was looking on DVLA website, but I did not see anything about it. Thank you for any clues.

Have a read through this mate it may be of interest: en.allexperts.com/q/UK-Scottish-Welsh-935/2009/5/find-info.htmAlso= "Regulation 11 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 refers to the permitted overhang on certain classes of vehicles Heavy motor car and motor car - the maximum overhang is 60 percent of the distance between the transverse plane which passes through the centre or centres of the foremost wheel or wheels and the transverse plane which passes through the foremost point from which the overhang is to be measured." If you understand what it means like! ;D

Thank you guys.
40cm overhang is then no problem at all. That is a very good news. Now stands nothing in the way to buy a kayak.

i got pulled over last summer by the police. and seems that i have a tarpon140 and only a vx astra hatch back they said to me that it was to long and that i need a trailer for it .so i said on my licence is says i cant tow a trailer so i said the only way i can take it around is on the roof of the car so he said if you put a bit of bright colour rag on the end of the kayak then that would be fine because people can see it. and i said well it is bright red so shoerley people could see it. but i dont care what they think. its one rule for them and one rule for us i know this dosent help but i thought i would get it off my chest

Can any one help with what is the best way to transport a kayak on roof bars ?. Is it best to have the kayak hull up or down ?.
Does any one bother with the Thule type carriers or just lash to the bars ?.
Photos appreciated as it would make it idiot proof for me !!!!.
Cheers

I looked into the thule roof bars and they cost a bloody bomb ! i bought an inflateable roof rack from argos and it does the trick nicely and when your not using it, it rolls up and can be stored in the boot, if money is tight its worth a look ?

I bought some paddy hopkirk bars which cost about £48.00 then put some insulation pipe from b+q 50p ,round them taped up with duck tape, which stops the yak from sliding about, works a treat. I also load my yak hull up.

If you are after roof bars keep an eye on ebay as there are loads of 2nd hand ones for auction and they come very cheap. I got my thule bars for £25. BARGAIN.
