a sit inside re-born.
A few months back now I decided to try a restoration project
I bought a rather tatty fibreglass sit inside kayak it had been well used and damaged and poor repairs had been done to it over the years it had also been painted with various odd coloured paints I think some of them were house hold gloss but it was to my surprise watertight I bought the kayak for the massive sum of £10.00 and must be honest on my way home I was thinking I had wasted £10.00 but it all turned out ok in the end here is a few photos of the project from start to finish .
Full view of the project showing its gloss finish
The black band around it is gaffer tape
The end with what looks like a body filler repair
Another typical repair
The worst bit of all
The first job was to remove the gaffer tape and dig out the botched repairs then a full sanding of the hull back to the glass this took 3 days
Next was a proper repair to all the bad bits using boat grade fibreglass and filler
Then a repaint using marine paint
This really shows the repair to the bad end
This was completely re-built using marine glass fibre and little filler
The ends were then painted with marine grade black gloss for extra protection
A few simple grab lines and foot rests
In the end this has turned out to be a really nice little kayak
The whole project was completed in 6 days
The cost of the project was £40 plus the original £10.00 the kayak was bought for
So that’s £50.00 in total a lot of hours and a massive amount of satisfaction
Would I do it again ……. Without a thought I would
