Until the body in the sea near Porth Dinllaen is identified , we cannot be certain that it is that of the 53 year old woman, an experienced kayaker, who has gone missing.
However, I went to Holyhead Country Park on Sunday 29.8.10 and watched the Holyhead lifeboat tow in a yacht from the Irish sea in what can only be described as stormy weather (Force 6/7 I guess) . We then went round to Trearddur Bay which is somewhere near where I think the group of kaykakers, including this lady, launched from on the same date .
It was okay in the shelter of the bay but outside, the offshore wind was strong, and was not one I would have considered suitable for an extended paddle. Enough said, but even with my limited knowldege and experience , I would not have gone beyond the Trearddur Flag Mast in those conditions .
It is easy to make this sort of comment after the event , but I think that it reinforces the need to think 'be safe first' (or 'risk assess' if you like) as this website repeatedly states, before setting out .

Also it demonstrates the need for any group to watch out for each other. No going off alone, also the group paddles at the speed of the slowest paddler in the group. It is very sad,

If they had a VHF radio, this would never have happened! How experienced is experienced when you skimp on basic survival and safety equipment? RIP fellow kayaker!
