My friend who was into microlites decided to buy a farm in our village because it had around 4acres and he would be able to fly from his own runway. Well things don't always go to plan. He had enough runway length but had not taken into account how high the hedge was. After JUST managing to get airborne, he had a very pleasant flight but then came the landing. The wind had now changed and the approach was over a tree with no other options. After 6 attempts, he bottled it and decided to land on the old US airbase on the outskirts of the village where the runway had been removed in a number of places.
Now from the air, this field was as flat as a snooker table and in real terms it was flat but he did not realize until touching down that whilst flat it had 3' high oilseed rape growing before it flowered. The microlite cost £12,500. The damage cost £6,850 sold for £5995 inc delivery.
He bought some sheep for the private runway. Phil

i used to work in the coal reclemation buisness 30 odd years ago. one of theese used to fly around most days. it landed one day the chap had ran out of petrol. a quick chat with him he told me he was selling it to buy a 2 seater. how much i said £250 was the reply. sold i said. see you tomorrow. next day it flew over us and landed. he come up to me took my money and pointed a a few things this does this that does that. meanwhile a car pulled up in he got and off he went. im 19 years old and no everything about everything so starts it up and off i go bouncing down the road like a idiot. got off the ground tried to turn round about 10ft off the ground SMASH. it realy hurt thought my arm was broke so off to hospital. it wasnt. only my pride was. week off work then went back. it had been moved to a big shed on site by my workmates while i was off. never saw the thing again. oh to be young again. cheers mel

I was in the South Derbyshire Coalfields around that time Mel....slightly different work though. Spent a long time as a solo bobby at Rawden just in case the pickets ever came south again. Used to be a great social club down by the Bath Yard. lol

Nice looking machine Steve - what is it? I used to have a MainAir Gemini Flash 2 back in the late 80's before moving on to a Kitfox. Did some of my training up near Blackpool, Graham Hobbs I think - a 50 acre field near the A6 / M6. I think my old hangar still exists (sold it to a Shadow owner) on The Plassey farm and caravan site south of Wrexham Nice pics! Martin
