I have one of these on my Big Game and they are very good to store things in that you are NOT going to use at sea but I would not use whilst on the water as they are very difficult to re position and reseal as they have only 2 twistlock catches and a full length grip lip on the other edge which takes some alignment. If you can get one with 4 twistlocks ( 1 at each corner ) as used on Malibu Kayaks, X13 or X Factor, they would be 1000% better, if you can't, think carefully before you cut a hole. Phil

have a look at this before you start www.northwaleskayakfishing.co.uk/id28.htmlthe inside box is a plastic draw and makes a big difference to the rigidity of the kayaks cutout and practicality of the hatch. do not use rivets to secure the frame they will become loose over time and the frame will leak use nuts and bolts

Phil I have to admit that I access my centre hatch several times during a trip. I keep my leads, terminal tackle and flask in there. I can be in and out in seconds if required. With the lid closed water intregrity isn't a problem. I've tested mine whilst closed several times in controlled conditions..... and uncontrolled quite recently! I'm going to be testing a new drysuit this weekend in my local pond and out of interest I'll do a capsize drill with the centre hatch open to see what happens

I also have the original hatch with 2 twist locks at the front and regularly access it during fishing. I find it locates and locks easily and saves me twisting round to access the rear well for bits of tackle, flask and sandwiches. I fitted it after reading the info from here on how to do it and wouldn't be without it. Bought it from Brookbank. I hope this is of help.

Rob and BJ, I am amazed you can easily re seat the hatch lid because mine is quite tricky to get back on. Now that you guys have said this, I will have another play and run some Vaseline on the rubber seal which is the the thing that grips the plastic lip. Phil

Just a follow up on the BG centre hatch. I took note of how a couple of you are able to use the hatch with no problems at all, I decided to take a serious look at my hatch to see why I cant refasten once open. I have come to the conclusion that the company who fitted the hatch made a total mess and in the process distorted the plastic frame. It really comes as no surprise as they fitted the Hummingbird FF leaving a 1'' hole for water to enter and the rudder had to be completely reset as it was nigh on impossible to use. I wont say who the company was but they sell a lot of kayaks and I saw the invoice they charged the previous owner----ouch.
I am now in the process of covering the hole and fitting the Mazzif hatch shown in the Bargains and product review sections. Phil
