Werner Cyprus paddle
Thanks to the guys from system-x www.systemxkayak.co.uk/ we have been given the chance to review a Werner Cyprus cranked shaft paddlewww.systemxkayak.co.uk/gear_detail.php?productID=188.
I will have it with me at the meets if you would like to try it out yourself just let me know.
The paddle is a top of the range paddle and costs over £300.
Its made from carbon and the blades are foam core which means the blades are buoyant I found that each time I made a stroke at the end of the stroke the blade pops up this makes it very easy to paddle and aids the stroke no end it means you can paddle all day because you are not physically pulling the paddle out of the water on each stroke the buoyant blade does this for you.
The second thing I notice is how well the shaft is designed it’s a cranked shaft we have and it means you don’t get any wrist ache the crank is at such an angle that your wrists are in a very natural position when paddling also the shaft is not round its an offset oval in cross section so it fits the hand perfectly so again you don’t get that hand ache we sometimes get on a long paddle to the mark.
The paddle is a 2 piece it has a patented lock system which positively locks the blade and has a small button on the shaft to realise and lock it has a small scale also on the lock system so you can set the feather angle by just aligning the marks then lock the paddle in place .
The over all appearance of the paddle is spectacular with deep lacquer shine which shows off the weave of the carbon and protects the paddle from scuffs and bangs.
Because of the construction it is a very strong piece of kit that should last a lifetime its also important to note how the extra lawyers of resin is applied to the joint between the shaft and the blade this gives added strength to the paddle and ensures it will take all the riggers and abuse we give paddles while out fishing.
All in all this is a fantastic piece of kit that is light easy to use and very practical for us fishermen the shape of the blade ensures we get maximum power in to each stroke using the minimum of effort which in short means we can paddle for a lot longer and harder during the day and reach the marks faster which will give us more bait in the water time on each trip .I think most of us kayak fishermen tend to neglect the paddle a bit and this paddle just shows how much difference the paddle really makes to the days paddling and fishing as I have said earlier you are most welcome to try this paddle out at the meets I know you will be amazed at the difference it makes this is an expensive piece of kit but once you have used it you will realise just how much benefit it gives to us and well worth spending the extra money on .
a big thanks to antony from system x for sorting this paddle out for us to try and test .
