Gary and I met up with Neil at Llandulas for a shot at the bass. On arrival the wind was up and coming in from the north, so much for the westerly breeze :/ It was a case of go hard or go home, there was white horses out at sea and a nice surf running up and onto the rocks which would make launching interesting.
I thought little of it having launched into some horrific conditions but it was Neils first time launching into a rough sea so he was a tad apprehensive. Following a brief kayak fishing tutorial The yaks where lined up with the surf breaking on the bows, Neil was first to go and with some guidance walked his yak out, jumped aboard then paddled his way though the surf. Gary and I followed on, I love a good surf launch, its thrilling and never gets old, I like the way the kayak punches through the waves as they breaks, It just feels natural as though this is what a kayak is for. It certainly wasn't the time nor place for a small boat.
We where guided onto my mark by back up GPS after having issues with my FF (now sorted after replacing the battery connections). We had just anchored up and Gary was into a dogfish, not a good sign, there are never dogfish on the reef. My first bait went down and I almost seemingly caught a dogfish on the drop. We gave it a hour on the first spot during which we accounted for many many dogfish. I made the call to move uptide in hope of finding the fish but it was anchors down, baits down dogfish up. I started playing the blame game and remembered a mention about the May bloom by a friend a few days earlier... We passed a brown patch of water on the way out that I just dismissed as suspended sediment that had been washed off the top of a sand bank.
On the Ebb the water was muddy brown and was staining the lines, it appears its that time of year :/
