The System-X's Manta Ray 12ft is an excellent fishing kayak but, at present, does not come with flush mounted rod holders. So this small "How to" shows how simple they are to fit yourself. 1. Firstly I made a rough template of the hole required for positioning purposes. 2. I then marked out with marker pen the location I preferred and found and marked the centre point. 3. I then drilled a pilot hole for the hole saw 4. With a 57mm hole saw I made a round hole. 5. Putting the rod holder in the hole I tested for fit. 6. Then with the marker pen I marked where I needed to remove some more plastic for a snug fit. 7. I found a file was ideal for removing the unwanted plastic. 8. Perfect fit, I now drilled 3mm holes ready for the No6 x 1 1/2" stainless steel self tapers. 9. Clean the whole area with methylated spirit, including the underside of the rod holder so the silicone will stick better. 10. Add plenty of good quality silicone to the underside of the rod holder and especially around the screw holes. 11. Screw down the holder with the self tapers, BUT NOT all the way. 12. Finish off with a hand screw driver. 13. Clean off the silicone which squished out. 14. Finished article, ready for the next fishing adventure. Tim
What make and type of silicone would you recommend please?
I am thinking of fitting a couple of these to the area behind the seat on the Manta Ray 10'
