Hi there, pretty new to the forum. Intend to post more when our yak is ready for the water next month sometime. ;D (hopefully) Just thought I'd share this in case it was of any use to anyone else on here. On our Malibu 2 xl angler we needed some sort of tub to slide into the hatches. After a bit of searching my mate Andy found the perfect tub. Simply take the handles off push in to hatch hole. It is a nice snug fit with a little lip that will not allow the tub to fall through to the bottom of the kayak. Then simply put a bead of silicon around and wipe clean. Seems to have done the perfect job! We got the tubs from Macro. The only down side of course is jam butties and jam on toast for the next 2 years! Oh yea each tub cost £5 but it does fit perfectly! Thanks for the info. Im sure somebody will find it of use. What size are the hatches on the malibu? It might be usefull on other kayaks as well. Also how deep from top to bottom is it? You will be very welcome to come to the meets.

Hi Steve, They are 7" Hatches on the yak. As for depth of the tub I'm not too sure, I would have to check. However to be honest I think they were plenty deep enough or I think it could be a tad awkward getting bits and pieces from the bottom of the tub if it went right down. When we are ready to go out Steve, I will be posting on here to see if anyone would be available to join us as we are totally new to this game and really appreciate some xtra help and advice where needed. Our most local beach to us and we think the simpliest place to start is pensarn beach which is where we were thinking of trying from. The last piece of kit we need is the vhf radio, which do appear to be quite costly. If anyone could advise us of a handheld one at a reasonable price I would be most grateful. ;D Many Thanks, Tight Lines

For what its worth here's what I did after I put 8 inch hatches in my Perception freedom:
I got some plastic clematis netting from a local garden store. Its hard plastic and very tough. I then shaped it so that I could make it into a open top box using zip ties. Because its flexible I could then force it through the hatch so it sits as a box within the hull. That means you can put stuff through the hatch and it will stay within arm's reach (obviously you can make the box as big as you want). It not waterproof but I find the hull stays pretty dry and valuables like wallet, car keys etc I put in a sealed container.
You get far more storage space this way. I find I can store everything I need in the hull (including spare clothes, hats, lunch, water etc) using this method. Its a bit of a rummage to find things again but its worth it.
I've also seen it suggested that you get a flexible washing-up bowl (ortleib apparently make them for camping) and use that as the box within the hull. That should keep everything dry but I haven't yet been able to find a suitable bowl.

;D in reponse to seajunkys question about depth i think i measured them at about 5 or 6 inches deep. i was trying to be discreet, you do get funny looks measuring jam pots,as well as paint pots in b and q still the jam is nice, over 12lb in weight in both tubs,it will take a bit of effort to put that lot away lol

Well there you have it guys, we have had our very own crack undercover investigation team secretly measuring the pots of jam. Well done Andy. So the pots are actually 7" diameter by 5 or 6 inches deep. I think that they will fit the hatches on a few different kayaks. I think that these will make good bait tubs.
Well done guys.
