???When i was fishing down at west bay yesterday morning there was a guy and 2 kids on the beach with a 10ft rib and a sot yak . he was struggling to get in in the water so i gave him ahand . he had a nice set up color gps and fish finder a nice new 15hp outboard and a fish finder on the yak as well . so i said its a lovely day how far are you going out . ho he says 4 5 miles off i will tow the kayak out and the kids can muck about on it while i fish . so i said be careful and make sure you you put your Buoyancy Aids on as thats a fair way off shore . with that he said we haven't got any don't need them . now one of the kids was a only about 10 and the other was in her teens . So we carried on chatting turned out the harbor master wouldn't let him launch from the slip as he had NO safety gear at all just a mobile phone . so i told him to put the boat back in the car and pop to the local tackle shop thay sell yaks and fladden Buoyancy Aids for under £20 each as i was in there this morning buying rag . or i would wait on the beach with the rib until he got bk . with that he just said i should mind my own business and took off out to sea . I still find it hard to believe that things like this still happen .

You know Shane, there are fools in all walks of life but when they put their own kids at risk they should be prosecuted. Phil

Well done for at least trying Shane.Sadly some people will not be told. It is a shame the harbourmaster has no jurisdiction on the beach.

I have been on the water for 20 years now in all sorts of craft big and small . and i never leave shore with out my safety kit . And yes i think that people should be prosecuted for putting kids or any one at risk . I have worked on charter boats and you are responsible for every ones safety . 2 years ago i pulled a lady with good life jacket on out of the river at teignmouth when her hubby capsized there tender while trying to get the cover off his fishing boat . he had no life jacket on . and was able to get hold of a big mooring buoy where she was half way out to sea when i got to her . it was a falling spring tide and i was in my 10ft rib had to dump half my gear over the side to get her in the rib . on the first go at rolling her in to the rib i ripped the backside of her jeans off . the second time i try ed i got her in the boat . she was a large lady . when i said sorry about your jeans . she replied you could have riped all my clothes off as long as you got me in the boat .. ;D ;D . and her hubby had been dumped on a boat in the middle of the harbor by a local charter skipper who told him to sit there and think about what he was doing in very colorful language . when i got bk to the slip with the lady 2 guys who i know form taunton had just come in with there boat and i was saying how i had to dump most of my tackle over the side . They said never mind Shane we have been out for 9 hours and we ant caught any thing that big .. lol But things could have been so different if she had no life jacket on . Shane

That did cross my mind ::)but knowing my luck i would end up getting nicked for criminal damage or worse seeing how the law is clamping down on knife crime . And i don't think it would stop him repairing the boat and doing the same thing next weekend . I'm not sure what the answer is when it comes to stupidity

I'm sick of seeing these stupid people on the water. I was at Abersoch 2 weeks ago with a mate going round from Machroes to Porth Ceiriad and it seemed that 3 out of 4 people in speedboats didnt have BA's on even towing kids on doughnuts without them etc. We had to wave our paddles several times or we would have been mown down and eventually my mate got on the vhf to the coastguard to put out a warning for small craft, but probably most of them didnt have a radio. It should be made an offence to go out on the sea past a certain shore limit [about 5yds for some of these clowns] unless you have a BA and basic [waterproof]communication equipment or accept that in the event you have to be rescued you will have to pay for it. rant over

I believe strongly that the sea is the only place that we can go out and enjoy ourselves on with few restrictions and that it should be up to each individual to take responsibility for themselves and the persons in their care whether it be on a boat, swimming, surfing etc. If you need to be rescued through negligence then you should be made to pay the rescue services involved. I watched the one show the other night and it did a spot on local fishermen in pollperro, not one of them wore a L/J and it also showed their young kids operating a tender on there own without L/J's on, so when the pro's act like this what example does it give to the novices. but please let the sea be ours to enjoy and not to let the small minority spoil it for us . Unfortunately you will always have unfit parents whether it be going to sea without L/J's or on dry land pushing prams in front of them between parked cars to cross a busy main road or letting 3 year olds play out on the sreets unattended you can go on and on.

Why don't the government make it law all boats, kayaks rafts etc will have life jackets pfds etc before going aflaot.... Simple think of the amount of RNLI calls that would not take place. Money saved as this seems to be the the most inportant item of todays government? No there to tied up in saving the own necks.....expensies... lies, phone tapping and worse... I could go on but not enough space. Oh and the EU expensies on and on! Bob

beware what you wish for bob. would that include surfers, even rock fishermen. I can see your point, and I'm going to brookbanks tomorrow to start getting all the safety stuff together, as suggested here and anglers afoat. Then I'll sort the yak. I'm a ex lifeguard, and ex-military, so very safety concious. And I'm getting a tandem, so will be responsible for the wife while fishing, and would never forgive my self if something happened, and I wasn't prepared. People just think get the water craft, and then see the cost of the safety stuff( in my case about £800(includes drysuit), and think that they will risk it. I've seen the results when it goes wrong(recovered drowned body) and I never want to see it again.
At the end of the day, you have to live with yourself if the worse happened.
