Just a quick post to introduce myself. My name is Ken, I'm to become a pensioner next month and have been retired for 3 years. I am fortunate to live on Anglesey. I have fished for most of my life but not so much recently. I have also owned kayaks (old, yellow, fibreglass, ex boy scout troop things) which, if I turned my head quickly, dropped me in the water. At various times I have had boats up to about 16' but it always seemed to be the case that when I was wanting to go fishing my mates were working and vice versa!
So, as I now have time (shmbo permitting) I thought I would try kayak fishing. I have done quite a bit of research and looked at various forums in order to educate myself a little. This forum seems to have the most 'local interest' to me and you seem to be a helpful and friendly group.
The kayaks I am looking at include the Prowler, Trident, Drifter, Tarpon 120,Malibu 14, Native Slayer and that sort of thing. They seem , using my limited knowledge, to be the kind of yaks I should be looking at as I am 5' 9" and 13 stone. Any comments on this would be most welcome.
Looking forward to getting involved in both the fishing and this forum.
Best regards, Ken.

Welcome Ken and Happy New Year ! I have owned a few of your mentioned kayaks and canoes....but don't be in a hurry to purchase one. But,if you haven't decided on choice yet, have a look down in Menai Bridge you may see something you like as far as angling kayaks go. Next to Liverpool Arms Pub. There are also guys here on NWKF forum with years of combined knowledge and experience to help you too And its a great site Tight Lines

Hi nala, Thanks for the reply.
I have met Dave in the shop you mention. Neither of us knew until we were talking in the shop that I was the bloke who helped his wife land 5lb. mullet at our local beach many, many moons ago!
Small world eh?
I am actually on the trail of a galaxy at the moment. I don't know where it is or who owns it but I'm hoping it's a Sturgeon and not a Cruz. If it comes to pass mmmmmmmm. doubtful? I could soon ready for the water and looking for someone to ensure I don't drown on my maiden outing! Regards, Ken.

Hi there, Just a quick update and some questions if I may. I tracked down the Galaxy and it is indeed a Sturgeon. It now lives in my front garden on it's (almost built) trailer. With it came a load of gear, wetsuit, gloves, paddles, seat, etc. I am now looking for a drysuit. What a minefield! So far I think I need a front zip, neoprene, (including seals), with underfleece. I am looking at Typhoon,Gul, Otter and the like. Now the questions, Are the 'immersion suits' by Crewsaver and others on the bay of evil for £30-£50 worth while? Are they up to the job? Ought I to be looking at new or used?
What is the best way of finding a 'buddy' to go out with?
Many thanks for any help you can give. Regards, Ken.

Immersion suits are not dry suits and must not be regarded as such. In the winter and other times of the year for that matter, a dip in the sea or canal will zap your strength in a few minutes and your head will take a real shock even if the rest of your body keeps dry, those few moments can and will take away your logic and what to do, believe me.
You are new to this game and your life is far too valuable to mess with cheap gear, buy a proper dry suit, Typhoon are as good as it gets and don't be too certain that you want a front opener, I found a rear opener easier to use so try some on before you splash the cash and DON'T buy off the net without trying it on as the fit on a dry suit doe's not always go by the sizes you might expect.
I can tell you that a latex neck and cuffs will give the best seal but may need stretching or trimming to fit whereas the neoprene neck and cuffs are more comfortable but not quite as good a seal as latex unless improvements have been made since I last looked which is about 5 years ago.
I can't recall if there is a dealer on Anglesey to supply dry suits but even if it means you need to travel, do so in order to get the best item you can afford.
When you have your dry suit, as early as possible, get someone to join you and get some self rescues done. They are tricky if you try for the first time on your own so get help and master this requirement via practice because you WILL take a dip at some stage so you need to know what to do.
Hope that helps a little.
Phil

Hi Phil, Many thanks for your comments and advice. Also thanks for clearing my confusion over immersion/dry suits. When I first saw immersion suits my initial reaction was 'too good to be true' now I know why this is the case. I fully intend to buy a proper dry suit and as you suggest Typhoon are at the top of my list (second place goes to Gul) We have quite a few dealers on Anglesey, we even have three in our little village, but none of them does drysuits! As an aside, I finished the trailer for the kayak today and tried it out on a short drive. It tows well and is quite secure. However, reversing is not easy when one cannot see the trailer. I shall mount a flag on the stern end so that I can see it. Again, thanks. Regards, Ken.

Hi again all,
Further to Phil's comments above. I now have a Typhoon drysuit and have been for 'trial runs' twice at llanberis lake. I enjoyed both trips very much and feel that I am now ready to tackle that really big, salty pond.
Self rescue is obviously of great importance and I feel that I need to master this as soon as possible. However, I am not confident about trying this on my own so I'm looking for a 'paddle buddy' to hold my hand. If anyone feels that they could help me then I would be most grateful to the tune of several pints or other recompense!
regards, Ken.

Just to introduce myself. My name is Pete, I’m based on the Wirral side of the Dee. I haven’t been on a yak before but I do some fishing on the Dee and used to do a lot of sailing there. Been doing the dripping tap on the wife for a few weeks as I like to soften her up before big purchases😎. Nearest launch point is Thurstaston.
