Thanks for the morning call Tony! It was nice to meet you again mate! I tried for tope all day but caught just bull huss and mackerel. Took a few mackies for the barbie and left on Saturday. Here are a few photo of the guys who were on the water with us: I managed a successful launch through the river mouth !!! Very enjoyable day with nice weather for a change. I can't wait until the next break in the weather.

I bottled out of launching saturday after seeing that surf so fished on sunday instead intending on catching a bass or two but they must have seen me coming, as spud and co launched via the river route i decided to walk and launch from the beach so by the time i finally paddled out to the bass marks i must have been all of 10 minutes behind them and they were into them straight away, soon as i arrived the bass cleared off,i believe there ere several caught up to 6lb.
All i all not a bad days fishing though with plenty of mackeral and sizeable bream caught and then as low tide approached loads of doggies then the crabs started raiding the bait and when i hauled a greater weaver up i thought its time to call it a day.

Don't worry Carl! We'll get them next time! ;D I'll show you how to launch via the river. It's fun, if you don't take a tumble ;D ;D ;D

Launched down the river with Spud & Lozz, the surf was interesting but not too bad.Just beyond the surfline we found the bass, Spud got the first on a popper, then I got a small schoolie and then decided to change the lure to a large surface popper as I've never had a fish on one before!! I cast out and retrieved the lure no more than 2 or 3 yds when a large fish smashed into it, I was well chuffed and what a scrap it put up, 5-6lb and should be nice for tea tonight . Spud & Lozz went out to the tope mark while I stayed a bit longer inshore, I managed to get another couple of smaller ones that went back. Being more than happy I headed out to the tope mark, sadly the tope hadn't read the script but I got plenty of decent bull huss on the mackeral and on the lighter rod there was a constant run of mackeral and small bream. Eventually headed back in but the surf was a little bit more challenging by this point I spent a couple of mins checking for the right time to go and then picked my time and started paddling like a loon, I was quite happy with myself and thought I'd made it to the shore, but then I heard the wave breaking behind me, I didn't have time to look around before I knew it I was sideways to the wave with the cockpit full of water, braced against it and sort of sideways surfed it all the way to the beach - loved it!! Yet again Towyn delivered the goods, a fab day and I can't wait to get back there, just a pity it will probably be next May . If the mods are reading this then you have to arrange a meet here next year theres just nowhere like it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice to hear you got your first bass on a popper - shame you killed a 5lb - 6lber though. That is prime breeding stock. If you don't want to do damage to the stocks (and yes 1 fish is doing damage to the stocks) then take one around the 3lb - 4lb mark and put the rest back.
Guernsey is learning this the hard way - their bass have been virtually wiped out, by the constant pressure of ROD & LINE catches - ok, commercial men using rod and line, but the bass stocks over there have collapsed because they kept taking the breeding stock......you can't do anything about it now, but you might like to consider it next time.
Don't take the huff on it, maybe you weren't aware or whatever, but fish of over 6lbs will ALL be female and the bigger females contribute far more ot the spawning than the smaller ones - This is where the MLS thing is so wrong.
To give you an idea, the number of viable ova a first time 2lb(ish) female supplies to the breeding effort is about 40x less than that contributed by one 10lb female. - So by killing a single 10lber, you are doing the same amount of damage as taking 40 schoolies - and most people would frown at that. A single 6lb fish taken is about the equivalent of 20 2lbers.....so that one fish IS important.
Just something to think about.

Dorado I know what you are saying,I'm aware of it and I knew as soon as I posted it that it would get this response but it has to be put into perspective, I'm not the greatest bass fisherman around but over the last two years I've probably caught 40+ fish and taken a grand total of 2! I really don't think I'm going to damage the stocks with that kill ratio 2:40? Its an immotive subject with varying views but be careful or people will believe they can kill a load of schoolies without any effect!

Like you, I catch a few, but I haven't killed a bass in 10 years.....I think they are over rated as an eating fish. Bream are better, and so are gurnards, but they are harder to locate. i haven't managed to catch a gurnard since leaving the south west. Bass are so easy to catch though - harder to locate, but once you have it is like pulling rabbits out of a hat, which is why they are so easily fished out.
I used to fish with a commercial rod & line man back home. We fished the Eddystone and often had over 2000lbs of bass in a night, most in the 8lbs - 12lbs class. That was back in the 1980s. Do you know, the bass still haven't come back to the Eddystomne - we wiped out the shoal and they have not recovered in 30 years. THAT is why I am so mindful of the repurcutions.
I have no problem with people taking a fish for the poit, but the breeding stock atre getting thinner and thinner on the ground. For instance - when fishing out there, how many do you catch in the 2lb - 3lb bracket? How many over 5lbs get caught? How many over 8lbs get caught/ How many in double figures?
The reason I ask is because you SHOULD be catching as many in the 6lb - 8lb bracket as you are actually catching in the 5lb size. The shoal IS being reduced.

Nice fish Karl and i would have knocked it on the head quit happily. I gave mine to the cat i don't like Bass I'm glad it was not me who had it away with all the Bass on the Eddystone Its no wonder people are shy about putting catch reports up Had a great day out on the water met a couple of new faces Lozz and Bassed top lads and look forward to fishing with them again. Lozz was a star how he managed to stay in his trident is beyond me. When we found the Bass and you could not get your paddle in the water for them Lozz was plugging away and had not noticed he had drifted in behind the surf and was side on. All i heard was a shout of O duck looked up to see a huge curling breaker just about to smash into him side on he disappear behind it i thought there was no way he was staying on but he appeared braking out over the top perfect must have spun it around like a Mini X I have a cunning plan on how to get in to the bigger bass that were among them and will give it a go this weekend my cat is going to be so happy only jooking i have eaten the cat it had a bit of a funny taste to it almost fishy ;D Any way I'm off now before the bass police get me

that sounds like a great session well in guys and what a nice bass karl i can just see it surrounded by peas and plenty of black and cayan pepper sizzling away on the beach well thats what i would have done with it anyway . over the years i have seen so many great bass returned and well done to the guys who have returned them i think the odd one is great to keep and eat i have not yet seen a commercial fisherman return one yet i never see anybody thanking or at least acknowledging the great thing us guys do when returning them.i think we have to remember when we fish it is our choice to return the fish or not and i don't think anybody should be shot down for not returning an in size fish ;D .
a few years ago i was fishing a mark near port dafarch and catching some very big bass i had about 4/5 of them in the same morning all were above 8lbs and all were returned during the afternoon while still fishing a guy came to where i was fishing pulled up a net and took every bass in that net about 20 decent fish. 1 fish had a mark on its gill cover i had caught that fish 2 hours before and returned it .so on that day all i did by returning the fish was to put them back for the commercial net man to catch if i had of tacken 3/4 of them fish i would have been slated for it . there are organizations specifically for the conservation of bass which i asked about a year ago if they would like to come on here and keep us all informed on what they do and how they do it but they were un willing to link to this website and forum and only seamed interested in what they could gain from us .
so with all that i think its up to the catcher as long as the size in legal to make that decision and he should not be criticized for it . nice fish Karl i would have eaten it myself .
